Final Fantasy XVI (2023) — the next mainline entry in the series, a standalone story

There is a small kingdom called Lucis, whose royal family has guarded the Crystal for generations — a treasure bestowed by the gods. For centuries, Lucis held out against the machine empire of Niflheim thanks to the magical Wall surrounding the capital, Insomnia, sustained by the king's own life force. When the story begins, King Regis Lucis Caelum is exhausted: he accepts a peace treaty, and to seal it, his son — Prince Noctis — is to marry Lunafreya Nox Fleuret, the Oracle of Tenebrae, his childhood friend whom he has not seen since he was twelve years old.

Final Fantasy XV thus opens like a road trip to a wedding: four friends, one royal car, and an entire continent spread out ahead of them. But this is also a game born of a turbulent decade — announced in 2006 under the name Final Fantasy Versus XIII, then renamed, handed to a new director, and moved to a new console generation — and that arduous journey seems to have seeped into the story itself: a tale of the bond between four friends, of a king who must bear his throne at the steepest possible price, and of a villain who waited 2,000 years just to… die.

⚠️ Spoiler warning: This article recounts the full story of Final Fantasy XV (the original 2016 release on PS4/Xbox One), including the ending, and also touches on the major story additions of the Royal Edition and the Episode DLCs where relevant.

📌 Quick summary: Prince Noctis sets out to marry Lunafreya and seal a peace treaty between Lucis and the Niflheim Empire — but midway through the journey, the capital Insomnia falls, King Regis is killed, and Noctis becomes an exile. Together with his three closest friends, he gathers the royal arms, awakens the Astral gods, and confronts Ardyn — an immortal who has waited two thousand years to repay a debt of betrayal by the gods and by history itself.

Chapter 1: The Prince Goes to Get Married — and the Car Dies on the Road

Four friends and the Regalia at the Hammerhead rest stop
The four friends and the Regalia at Hammerhead — the journey begins with a broken-down car they have to push by hand.

The farewell on the palace steps is brief but heavy. Regis — grey-haired, leaning on a cane after years of draining his life force to sustain the Wall — tells his son only this: mind his manners with his fiancée, and walk tall. He knows what Noctis does not: this treaty is a trap, and this may be the last time father and son ever meet. Traveling with Noctis are his three closest friends: Gladiolus Amicitia — the "Shield" of the future king, Ignis Scientia — his strategist and steward, and Prompto Argentum — a cheerful gunman, and the only commoner of the group.

Before they have even left the Leide region, the royal car — the Regalia — breaks down in the middle of the road, and the four young men have to… push it to the nearest rest stop, Hammerhead. There they meet Cid Sophiar — the old mechanic who went adventuring with Regis in his youth — and his granddaughter Cindy. Near the port of Galdin Quay, Lunafreya's white dog Umbra finds them, carrying a notebook with a blue sylleblossom pressed inside: all these years, the two childhood friends have secretly exchanged letters through this four-legged "messenger." At Galdin, a stranger in a fedora tells them the boat has not arrived yet, then walks off after a few cryptic remarks. None of them realize they have just come face to face with the man who will haunt their entire journey.

The next morning, disaster strikes via the radio: during the treaty signing, Niflheim breaks faith and attacks Insomnia; the capital falls, the Crystal is stolen, and all three — King Regis, Prince Noctis, and Lady Lunafreya — are reported dead. From a hill overlooking the capital wrapped in smoke and fire, Noctis calls Marshal Cor Leonis and hears the confirmation: his father is dead. The wedding trip officially becomes the journey of a king without a country — a king who does not yet know what he is supposed to do next.

Chapter 2: The Legacy of Kings, and the Quest to Reclaim the Crystal

Noctis receiving the weapon of an ancestor at a royal tomb
Noctis receives a weapon of his ancestors at a royal tomb — both the legacy and the burden his father left him.

The night Insomnia fell is told in full in the CG film Kingsglaive: General Glauca — the man who struck Regis down — is in fact Drautos, captain of the Kingsglaive; and the warrior Nyx Ulric wore the Ring of the Lucii and held the line until dawn, then vanished — the exact price the ring demands. In the game, Noctis seeks out Cor at Hammerhead and is led to the Tomb of the Wise: scattered all across Eos are tombs holding the souls and weapons of the kings of old — the Royal Arms — and the heir must gather them to gain the strength to reclaim the Crystal.

Cor also tells him why his father aged so quickly: the Wall around Insomnia had been draining Regis's life force for thirty years. Noctis is furious at having the truth kept from him, but Cor says one thing that silences him: Regis wanted his son to remember him as a father, not as a king. Breaking through the Norduscaen blockade, the group heads on toward Duscae. At Lestallum, they reunite with Iris — Gladiolus's younger sister — and receive a rare piece of good news: Lunafreya is alive, and she is holding the Ring of the Lucii that Regis entrusted to her before his death.

But Noctis has also begun to suffer from headaches, accompanied by visions of the Disc of Cauthess — the meteor crater where the god Titan is said to have borne a meteor upon his back since time immemorial. And at the lookout point in Lestallum, the man in the fedora appears once more, this time introducing himself by name: Ardyn. He says Titan is calling out to Noctis, and offers to… guide the whole group to the crater. A stranger who always appears at the right time, in the right place — and who knows far too much.

Chapter 3: The Oracle, One Step Ahead — Awakening the Gods

Titan awakens at the Disc of Cauthess
Titan, the colossal god who has borne the meteor at the Disc of Cauthess for a thousand years, awakens before the call of the Oracle.

While Noctis roams the land gathering Royal Arms, Lunafreya is on a journey of her own — a harder one still. Bearing the title of Oracle — one who communes with the gods and heals those afflicted by the Starscourge, the plague of darkness that turns people into monsters (daemons) and makes the nights grow ever longer — Luna travels across Eos to awaken the Astrals, the six gods of the world, and persuade them to form covenants with the future king. Each communion with the gods erodes her life force further; her brother Ravus — a high commander of the imperial army — understands this all too well, and it is the reason he loathes Noctis. But Luna does not stop: she knows the prophecy of the King of Light — the king chosen by the Crystal, who will drive the darkness from the world — and she accepts whatever price must be paid to bring Noctis to that destiny.

At the Disc of Cauthess, Ardyn — now revealed to be the Chancellor of Niflheim — leisurely opens the blockade gate and lets the group in to meet Titan. The colossal god rises; after a grueling trial, Titan accepts a covenant with Noctis. Next comes Ramuh, the god of lightning — and the one who guides Noctis through his trial is Gentiana, the mysterious Messenger who has been at Lunafreya's side since she was small. It is also during these days that the empire kills Jared — the elderly steward who saved Iris; while Gladiolus, blaming himself for not being strong enough, quietly slips away from the group to undergo the trial of the swordmaster Gilgamesh, and returns with a new scar (DLC Episode Gladiolus).

The next rendezvous is Cape Caem, which hides a secret harbor and King Regis's old boat. With the boat repaired, the four friends set sail for Altissia — the city on the water in the nation of Accordo, where Lunafreya is waiting and the sea god Leviathan slumbers.

Chapter 4: Altissia — The Wedding That Never Was, and the Wrath of the Sea God

Lunafreya's spirit returns the Ring of the Lucii to Noctis in a dream
Lunafreya's spirit returns the Ring of the Lucii to Noctis in a dream of farewell — the most beautiful and heartbreaking moment in Final Fantasy XV.

In Altissia, the Accordo government under First Secretary Camelia Claustra agrees to shelter Lunafreya so she can perform the rite, despite the pressure from the empire. Standing before the crowds, Luna begins the covenant with the sea god in the heart of the city. But the proud Leviathan refuses to grant her blessing to a king who "has not yet proven himself"; imperial forces pour in to kill the god, and the entire city is engulfed in tidal waves and gunfire.

Amid the chaos, Ardyn steps up before Lunafreya — and stabs her. With the last of her strength, the Oracle does what she had prepared her whole life to do: she summons the souls of the ancient kings to lend Noctis the strength to defeat Leviathan. In a dream between life and death, Luna places the Ring of the Lucii into Noctis's hands with her own, smiles, and departs this world. The wedding the two of them had waited twelve years for finally happens in the way no one wanted: as a goodbye.

Noctis wakes up several days later: Lunafreya is dead, and Ignis has lost his eyes in the battle. The base game does not spell out exactly what happened; only in the DLC Episode Ignis do players learn the truth: Ignis picked up the Ring that had fallen from the unconscious Noctis's grasp and put it on his own hand to gain the power to confront Ardyn. The ancient kings accepted him — but the price demanded of one not of the royal bloodline was his eyes. And there, through a vision from the Messenger dog Pryna, Ignis foresaw the complete prophecy: Noctis would have to die to save the world — a secret he carried alone, and still chose to remain to the very end.

Chapter 5: The Train into Darkness, and Ardyn's Trap

Ardyn holds a gun to Prompto aboard the train to Gralea
Aboard the train to Gralea, Ardyn uses illusions to swap appearances with Prompto — making Noctis push his closest friend off the train with his own hands.

Ever since Lunafreya fell, the world has slid visibly downhill: with no Oracle to hold it back, the Starscourge spreads rapidly, the nights grow longer, and the daemons grow ever more savage. The train carries the group to Gralea, where the Crystal is held captive, but the air inside the carriage is heavy as lead. Noctis withdraws into his grief, not daring to put on the Ring; Gladiolus explodes, accusing the king of shirking his responsibility while Ignis has just lost his eyes for him. Only when Ignis himself — the one with the most right to hold a grudge — declares that he will continue accompanying them even though he can no longer see the road does the quarrel die down, and Noctis promises to shoulder everything, without looking back.

The train stops in Tenebrae, Lunafreya's homeland: Fenestala Manor is ablaze, and Ravus has been executed for treason following the failure at Altissia. Amid the fields of sylleblossom, Noctis finally understands his difficult brother-in-law: Ravus always stood on his sister's side, and had been keeping the Sword of the Father in wait for the day he could hand it over to him. Passing through the snowy Ghorovas Gorge, where the corpse of Shiva — the goddess of ice slain by the empire years before — lies amid the frozen plains, Gentiana reveals her true form: she is Shiva herself, in the guise of a Messenger. Forming a covenant with her, Noctis learns one more chilling truth: Ardyn is immortal.

But Ardyn's cruelest blow still lies ahead. When the train comes under attack, he uses illusion magic to swap appearances with Prompto, so that Noctis — believing he is knocking his enemy away — pushes his closest friend off the train with his own hands. Prompto is captured; Gralea is now both the place where the Crystal is imprisoned and the prison of the friend to whom Noctis owes an apology.

Chapter 6: Gralea, Prompto's Secret, and the Ten-Year Sleep in the Crystal

Noctis stands before the Crystal inside Zegnautus Keep
Noctis stands before the Crystal, bound in chains within Zegnautus Keep — the doorway into the ten-year slumber.

The DLC Episode Prompto recounts the days of his captivity, and overturns everything players thought they knew about the ever-grinning marksman: Prompto is a clone from the laboratory of the scientist Verstael Besithia — his very "father" — created as raw material for the magitek soldier army; the barcode on his wrist is the brand of that facility. Rescued and raised in the capital of Lucis, Prompto lived his whole childhood in fear of his origins being discovered, until he received a letter from Lunafreya asking him to befriend the lonely Prince Noctis. When he is rescued at Zegnautus and tremblingly confesses everything, the answer he receives is laughably simple: nobody cares where he was born.

Gralea is a dead city: the "vanishing sickness" — the Starscourge itself — has transformed nearly the entire population, and Emperor Iedolas himself, into daemons; the faithful Regalia has been destroyed. Torn from his friends and with his powers sealed, Noctis can rely only on the Ring of the Lucii as he threads his way through the steel labyrinth. He finds the corpse of Ravus — killed by Ardyn, disguised as Noctis, as he was trying to return the Sword of the Father — and picks up his father's sword. Having defeated Iedolas, now become the daemon Foras, the group clears a path for Noctis into the central chamber: where the Crystal hangs bound in chains in midair.

When Noctis touches the Crystal, Ardyn reveals his true identity: Ardyn Lucis Caelum. Two thousand years ago, he was a healer chosen by the gods, who traveled the world absorbing the Starscourge into his own body to save all humankind. But once his body was filled with darkness, the Crystal deemed him unclean and rejected him; his younger brother — Somnus — branded his elder brother a monster, had him executed, and ascended the throne as the Founder King of Lucis, wiping every trace of the "first king" from the history books. The only problem: Ardyn could no longer die. He was imprisoned on the isle of Angelgard for 2,000 years, and by the time the empire freed him, only one purpose remained within him — to destroy the bloodline of Somnus and the very Crystal that had cast him aside, at the very moment of their greatest radiance.

Within the Crystal, Noctis comes face to face with Bahamut and hears the prophecy in full: the King of Light must absorb the Crystal's power, sit upon the throne, and offer up his own life to purge the Starscourge — the only way to kill the immortal Ardyn, within the realm of souls itself. Noctis accepts, and sinks into slumber within the heart of the Crystal. Outside, eternal night falls over Eos; throughout the ten years that follow, humanity huddles around the last points of light in Lestallum, protected by the surviving Kingsglaive and by the three friends of the sleeping king.

Chapter 7: The King of Light — The Final Battle and the Return of the Dawn

Noctis duels Ardyn in the final battle at Insomnia
The deciding duel between two kings: Noctis faces Ardyn amid the ruined capital of Insomnia.

Ten years later, Noctis opens his eyes on Angelgard — the very island where Ardyn was once imprisoned — wearing the full beard of a thirty-year-old man. Talcott, the little boy of years past, is now a grown hunter, and he drives the king back home. The reunion at Hammerhead does not last long: all three friends are older, covered in scars after a decade of daemon hunting — but their smiles upon seeing him are just as they were on the very first day. That night, around the last campfire, Noctis — who has been hopeless at speaking from the heart his entire life — finally blurts out through tears that this may be the last time the four of them sit together like this, and that "you guys are the best" — a scene the community ranks among the most tear-jerking in the entire series.

The next day, the four make their way into the ruined Insomnia. The Royal Edition adds a grueling road: the daemon hound Cerberus stands guard at the gate, the spirit of Lunafreya summons the Astrals to shatter Ardyn's poisoned Wall, and Ifrit — the god of fire resurrected by Ardyn through the Starscourge — will only dissipate before the icy kiss of Shiva. Within the palace, the soul of Somnus implores Noctis to set his elder brother free; and Noctis chooses to carry with him a photograph that Prompto took during their journey — as though carrying the finest years of his life along with him.

Ardyn sits waiting upon the throne, and above him the Crystal — and a gruesome exhibit: the corpses of Regis, Lunafreya, Emperor Iedolas, and Nyx Ulric, suspended in the air like trophies. He brushes the three friends aside: this is a battle between two kings. After the deciding duel, Noctis is the one left standing; Ardyn falls, strangely serene: "See you on the other side." Noctis does exactly what his father did ten years before: he sends his friends on ahead, telling them to "walk tall," then steps up to the throne alone.

Upon the throne, the 114th King of Lucis summons the Lucii. One by one, the ancient kings appear and drive their blades through him — a brutal rite that Regis silently witnesses — so that Noctis's soul, bearing the power of light, may leave his body. In the realm beyond, Ardyn lies in wait in his daemon form; but this time he does not face the young prince alone: Lunafreya, the kings of Lucis, and Regis himself are all present, and their combined strength cleanses the Starscourge from the soul of the man who suffered for 2,000 years. The Ring of the Lucii shatters; outside, for the first time in a decade, the sun rises over Eos. And in the final frame — also the image on the game's completed logo — Noctis and Lunafreya sit side by side upon the throne in the afterlife, she in the wedding dress she never got to wear, as if at last they have their wedding.

The Fates of the Characters

  • Noctis Lucis Caelum — Offers up his life upon the throne to purge the Starscourge; the 114th and final King of Lucis. In the afterlife, he is reunited with Lunafreya.
  • Lunafreya Nox Fleuret — Killed by Ardyn at Altissia after awakening the Astrals and returning the Ring of the Lucii. Her soul fights alongside Noctis in the final battle.
  • Regis Lucis Caelum — Dies on the night of Insomnia's fall, holding back General Glauca (the film Kingsglaive). His soul resides within the Ring of the Lucii, lending its strength to his son's final rite.
  • Ardyn Lucis Caelum — His body is defeated by Noctis, and his soul is cleansed in the beyond: the death he awaited for 2,000 years finally arrives.
  • Gladiolus, Ignis and Prompto — Survive; they spend ten years as daemon hunters awaiting the king's return, then see Noctis off into the final battle and greet the dawn together with all humankind.
  • Ravus Nox Fleuret — Branded a traitor after the events at Altissia; killed by Ardyn at Zegnautus Keep while attempting to deliver the Sword of the Father to Noctis. His honor is vindicated only through the letters he left behind.
  • Nyx Ulric (Kingsglaive) — Wears the Ring of the Lucii and fights until dawn on the night the capital falls, then vanishes as the Ring claims its price.
  • Cor Leonis — Survives, leading the remnants of the Kingsglaive to protect humanity through the ten years of darkness.
  • Iedolas Aldercapt — The Emperor of Niflheim, transformed by the Starscourge into the daemon Foras and destroyed at Zegnautus Keep; his empire collapses from within.

Common Misconceptions

Is Lunafreya merely a princess waiting to be rescued?

No. Luna is more proactive than anyone: it is she — not Noctis — who awakens one Astral after another, negotiates the covenants, and holds the Starscourge back for the whole world, despite knowing that every communion with the gods shortens her own lifespan, and knowing full well what the prophecy demands of the two of them. Lunafreya does not passively await death; she chooses her own path, and walks it to the very end.

Is Ardyn a villain who destroys the world just for fun?

No. Ardyn began as one chosen by the gods — a healer who sacrificed his own body to save the people — and was then betrayed by the Crystal and his own younger brother, and erased from history. The DLC Episode Ardyn reveals still more: Bahamut seems to have marked him out as a "sacrificial vessel" from the very beginning. He is a monster, certainly — but a monster created by gods and men alike.

Does the scene of Noctis and Luna on the throne at the end mean that they came back to life?

No: both of them are dead, and that scene unfolds in the afterlife — the wedding they never got to have while alive. This is also why the game's logo is only "completed" at the very end, when Lunafreya's image is added beside Noctis.

Did Ignis go blind because of the strain of the battle at Altissia?

The base game deliberately leaves this detail blank. According to Episode Ignis, Ignis placed the Ring of the Lucii on his own hand to fight Ardyn and protect the unconscious Noctis; the ancient kings granted him power, but took his eyes as the price. He also knew in advance of the death ordained for Noctis — and still chose to remain.

Is Stella from Versus XIII simply Lunafreya under another name?

No. When Versus XIII was reborn as Final Fantasy XV (E3 2013), the character Stella Nox Fleuret was cut entirely and the story was largely rewritten at the hands of director Hajime Tabata's team. Lunafreya is a completely different character, with a completely different role as the Oracle.

Fan Theories and Community Debates

Did Ardyn win or lose? Judged by his surface goals, Ardyn achieves almost everything: Somnus's line is extinguished, the Crystal is shattered, the order of the gods collapses. But the thing he yearns for most — to die and find rest — can only come from the hand of the King of Light he so despises. That outcome is a bitter victory for both sides: Noctis saves the world but loses everything, while Ardyn loses the battle yet escapes his 2,000-year curse.

Is Bahamut the true villain? After Episode Ardyn and the novel The Dawn of the Future (an alternate ending adapted from the cancelled DLC series), many fans have reconsidered the question: the Astrals set the entire tragedy in motion — choosing Ardyn as the vessel of darkness, Noctis as the sacrifice — and Bahamut stood ready to destroy Eos itself should the plan go astray; in the novel's ending, the characters rise up against this very god. The community remains divided, even though Square Enix has never declared one ending to supersede the other — the ending of the 2016 game is still the canonical one.

The open ending of Episode Ignis. Ignis's DLC contains a branching path in which he finds a way for Noctis to survive and reign — the Official Works materials call it a "secret plan surpassing even the intentions of the gods." Whether it could truly erase the immortal Ardyn or would only postpone the catastrophe, the game leaves open; nor has it ever been confirmed as canon.

How much did Lunafreya know beforehand? Luna's serenity leads many to believe that she knew the entire prophecy long in advance — including the fact that Noctis would have to die — and chose to stay silent so that he could have a journey of "truly living." If that is true, then every letter sent via Umbra, every sylleblossom pressed within that notebook, was a farewell sent gradually across the years.
