Beginning in 1997 at DMA Design with a top-down view, Grand Theft Auto exploded into a global phenomenon when GTA III (2001) took the series into 3D open worlds. Rockstar divides the series into three separate universes — the 2D universe, the 3D universe (GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas) and the HD universe (GTA IV, GTA V) — each with its own timeline and characters, sharing only city names and fictional brands.
