Four years after the nightmare at the Baker mansion, Ethan Winters finally had what he had always wanted: a quiet home in Europe, a wife returned from the dead, and a six-month-old daughter named Rosemary. They lived under the protection of Chris Redfield and the BSAA, and every night Mia read Rose the fairy tale about a little girl walking through the forest to meet her grandmother. Nobody suspected that the fairy tale itself was a map of the nightmare to come โ€” and that the mother reading the story was no longer Mia.

Resident Evil Village is the eighth main entry in Capcom's series, released on May 7, 2021, and a direct sequel to the Resident Evil 7 story. The game keeps its predecessor's first-person view but expands into a snow-covered Eastern European village, where every classic horror legend has a ruling Lord: a vampire in the castle, a ghost in the mansion, a lake monster, and a mechanical genius in the factory. Behind all four stands Mother Miranda โ€” and a secret powerful enough to rewrite the entire history of the series.

This article retells the full main story of Resident Evil Village, including the Shadows of Rose epilogue from the Winters' Expansion, to close the book on Rose's fate after her father's death. Warning: this article reveals the game's two final twists.

๐Ÿ“Œ Quick summary: Ethan Winters lives in hiding in Europe with his wife Mia and daughter Rose when Chris Redfield opens fire and kidnaps Rose to a snowy village in Eastern Europe. Ethan defeats the four Lords Dimitrescu, Beneviento, Moreau and Heisenberg one by one to recover the four flasks holding Rose, then discovers Miranda impersonated Mia, used him as a tool, and that he himself died back in the Baker incident of 2017. Ethan kills Miranda, saves Rose, then sacrifices himself to detonate the Megamycete.

The fateful night: Chris Redfield opens fire on the Winters family

Chris Redfield appears in the Winters family home
Chris Redfield โ€” the hero who once saved Ethan in Dulvey โ€” is the man who opens fire on his family.

The night of February 8, 2021 begins cruelly normally: Mia puts Rose to sleep, Ethan makes coffee, then the window shatters. Chris Redfield โ€” the man who once saved Ethan from the Baker mansion โ€” walks in with the Hound Wolf squad, shoots Mia in front of Ethan, and orders Rose taken away.

The next morning, Ethan wakes beside the overturned transport truck in the snowy forest. No Chris, no squad, no Rose โ€” only crows and a dead village in the valley below. As Ethan follows the giant claw marks, he enters the place the villagers both revere and fear as Mother Miranda's village, carrying one question with him for the whole journey: why would Chris, the hero of the entire series, become a child kidnapper?

The village is being slaughtered: the surviving villagers huddle in a house, praying before Miranda's altar, then are torn apart one by one by the Lycans โ€” fast, strong, weapon-wielding wolf-like creatures โ€” right before Ethan's eyes. When Ethan is captured and dragged before Miranda and the four Lords, he understands: this village is not a refuge, but a trap laid a hundred years ago.

The snowy village and the Lycan pack: the trial of the four Lords

A Lycan roaring in the snow
A Lycan โ€” a villager transformed by the Mold โ€” is the snowy village's most familiar enemy.

Ethan's first meeting with the four Lords plays out like a grotesque trial. Dimitrescu demands Ethan be handed to her daughters for โ€œentertainment.โ€ Beneviento stays silent, letting the doll Angie speak for her. Moreau babbles flattery at Miranda. Heisenberg sneers, pins a metal bar into Ethan's chest with magnetism, and asks Miranda to let him โ€œplayโ€ with the outsider. Miranda rules: Ethan belongs to Heisenberg โ€” a death sentence disguised as a game, and the first move in a plan Ethan will only understand when it is far too late.

Heisenberg drops Ethan into a maze beneath the mines, where Lycans lurk around every bend and a giant grinding machine rolls after him. Ethan survives โ€” not because he is strong, but because he is something the village has never seen: a man whose wounds heal themselves. When Ethan returns to the village, the mysterious merchant who calls himself the Duke is waiting: Rose is still alive, but her body has been split into four parts, placed in four flasks, each guarded by a Lord.

Miranda needs a complete body for her resurrection ritual, and she separated Rose to โ€œpreserveโ€ her until the day of the ceremony. From here the game takes a clear shape: four Lords, four flasks, four territories โ€” and Ethan has no choice but to kill each one of them, exactly as Miranda wants most.

Castle Dimitrescu: blood, wine, and three daughters

Alcina Dimitrescu with her three daughters in the castle
Alcina Dimitrescu with her three daughters Bela, Cassandra and Daniela โ€” the castle's vampire family.

Castle Dimitrescu is the game's most classically Resident Evil chapter: a magnificent mansion, portrait-lined corridors, puzzles about angel masks, and an aristocratic family that drinks servants' blood to make Sanguis Virginis wine โ€” โ€œmaiden's blood.โ€ Alcina Dimitrescu stands nearly three meters tall, wears a wide-brimmed hat, and is surrounded by her three daughters Bela, Cassandra and Daniela. The three daughters are not human but swarms of fly-like insects, created from the bodies of three women implanted with Cadou parasites, merged into human shape and calling Dimitrescu mother.

Ethan is hung upside down in the wine cellar, has his hand cut, and is hunted through every room โ€” and he kills the three daughters the only way possible: luring them out into the cold, where their insect bodies freeze and shatter. Each death drives Dimitrescu madder, until she chases him down into the family crypt. There, Ethan stabs her with the Dagger of Death's Flowers โ€” a poisoned blade forged specifically to kill her โ€” and watches her transform into a giant winged dragon, then petrify, fall to the castle grounds, and shatter.

In Dimitrescu's chambers, Ethan finds the first flask: Rose's head. The Duke confirms Ethan's worst fear: only when all four flasks are recovered can the reverse ritual restore Rose. But he does not say that Miranda herself ordered Dimitrescu to murder all her servants that very morning โ€” to Miranda, the villagers are merely raw material, and every death Ethan causes brings him closer to her plan.

House Beneviento: a nightmare without a gun

The doll Angie in House Beneviento
Angie โ€” the doll Donna Beneviento uses to speak to the world โ€” inside House Beneviento.

If Castle Dimitrescu is the action chapter, House Beneviento is pure horror โ€” and the chapter players remember most. On the road to the mansion in the foggy valley, Ethan inhales Mold-infected pollen, and from then on nothing he sees can be trusted. The house is terrifyingly silent: no monsters, no footsteps, just hundreds of dolls โ€” and one doll in a wedding dress named Angie, always waiting at the end of the corridor whenever Ethan turns around.

Donna Beneviento does not fight like the other Lords: she takes all of Ethan's weapons, locks him in the basement, and shows him hallucinations of Mia, plus a giant fetus-like creature crawling through the halls to the sound of a crying baby. No guns, no ammo, only running and hiding. When Ethan finds Angie and stabs her three times with scissors, the illusion breaks: he realizes he has been stabbing Donna herself all along. She collapses, petrifies, shatters, leaving behind the flask holding Rose's leg.

The Moreau reservoir: the most pitiable of the four Lords

The transformed Salvatore Moreau in the reservoir
The transformed Salvatore Moreau in the reservoir โ€” the village's most pitiable Lord.

Salvatore Moreau is the Lord players find hardest to hate: a deformed creature, hunchbacked, with a mouth full of jagged teeth, living in a flooded reservoir near an abandoned fishing village. He stammers, flatters, and begs Miranda to love him like a good child โ€” and he is the only one of the four Lords who truly believes Miranda loves him.

Ethan crosses flooded houses and a sewer maze where Moreau lurks like a shark in a tank. When Ethan takes the flask holding Rose's arm, Moreau flies into a rage and transforms into a giant creature like a whale crossed with a toad, with hundreds of eyes on its back. The battle takes place on the water, amid acid rain and bites that could swallow a boat whole. In the end, Moreau swells uncontrollably and explodes โ€” a miserable, lonely death, just like his life.

Heisenberg's Factory: an alliance offer refused

The transformed Karl Heisenberg in the factory
Karl Heisenberg in his transformed machine form โ€” the only Lord who dared defy Miranda.

Heisenberg's Factory is where the game shifts fully into action. This is a modern industrial zone in the middle of a century-old mountain region, home to the Soldat army โ€” corpses grafted with machinery, controlled by magnetism. Their master, Karl Heisenberg, is the only one of the four Lords still thinking clearly โ€” and the only one who sees through Miranda's plan.

When Ethan reaches the factory, Heisenberg does not attack at once but invites him to sit down, points to a wall covered with pictures of the other Lords โ€” all crossed out except Mia's โ€” and says it plainly: Miranda is using Ethan to kill off the Lords one by one, because she wants to replace all four with a single enforcer. Heisenberg proposes a deal: together, use Rose's power to kill Miranda, and Ethan will go free. Ethan refuses the moment Heisenberg admits he plans to turn Rose into a weapon.

Ethan is thrown into a pit to face Sturm; Chris destroys the factory from within; and Heisenberg transforms into a man-machine hybrid riding a giant war machine. Ethan defeats him with the homemade tank Chris left behind. When the factory explodes, Heisenberg dies with his last words still about Miranda: he did not die because of Ethan, but because of a dream of freedom that never came true.

The truth: Mother Miranda, the Megamycete, and the wife who was replaced

The mysterious old woman in the village โ€” actually Mother Miranda in disguise
The mysterious old woman wandering the village โ€” actually Mother Miranda in disguise, watching Ethan's every step.

After Heisenberg's death, Ethan finally meets Chris again โ€” and the truth crashes down like a wall. The woman Chris shot dead on the fateful night was not Mia but Miranda in disguise, using her shape-shifting power to infiltrate the Winters family for months. The real Mia was imprisoned in a laboratory beneath the village, and the whole kidnapping of Rose โ€” from impersonating Mia to deliberately causing the truck crash to โ€œrescueโ€ Rose from Chris's convoy โ€” was all part of her plan.

But that is only half the truth. In the cave beneath the village, Chris finds the Megamycete โ€” an ancient fungal super-colony worshipped by the villagers as the โ€œBlack God,โ€ the source of all Mold in the series. Miranda touched it over a century ago, after her daughter Eva died of Spanish flu in 1919; since then she has lived immortal, studied the Mold, and created the Cadou โ€” the parasite that turned the four Lords into monsters. More importantly: Miranda was once the mentor of Oswell E. Spencer, founder of the Umbrella Corporation in the original Resident Evil story โ€” Spencer learned from her about viruses and immortality, then created the T-Virus. In other words, the entire Raccoon City disaster traces back to a grieving mother in an Eastern European village.

When Miranda tears out Ethan's heart, he wakes in a white void, where Eveline โ€” the bioweapon girl from the Resident Evil 7 story โ€” waits and tells him what players suspected across two games: Ethan died the first time he met Jack Baker in Dulvey in 2017. What lived on is a Mold copy โ€” a memory preserved by the Megamycete, with unlimited regeneration but not immortality. Every time Ethan has a hand cut off or his heart torn out, that limit wears a little thinner โ€” and after Miranda tears out his heart, it is nearly spent.

The final battle and the price of a father

Mother Miranda in her true form facing Ethan
Mother Miranda in her true form, facing Ethan at the ritual site โ€” the game's final battle.

Ethan wakes one last time thanks to the Duke โ€” the mysterious merchant driving his horse-drawn cart through the burning village, bringing him to Miranda's ritual site. There, Miranda's ritual does not resurrect Eva but resurrects Rose instead: the girl's body is too strong, and her consciousness wins. Miranda flies into a rage, transforming through many forms โ€” spider, bird, winged monster โ€” and charges Ethan in the final battle on scorched earth. Ethan, his Mold body at its limit, still wins. He stabs Miranda, watches her crumble to ash, and holds Rose for the first time since the fateful night.

But victory comes with a price Ethan already knew: Chris planted a bomb in the heart of the Megamycete, and only someone who stays behind can detonate it. Ethan โ€” his body falling apart, beyond even the Mold's power to save โ€” snatches the detonator from Chris and pushes him out of the blast zone. He tells Chris one last thing: take care of Rose, and teach her that her father was a good man. Then he presses the button. The explosion levels the village, burns out the Megamycete, and ends a century of Miranda's obsession. On the helicopter away, Mia holds Rose and weeps; Chris realizes something else: the BSAA soldiers with him are not human but organic bioweapons โ€” and the BSAA, the organization he serves, has become the very thing he once swore to destroy.

Years later, in the epilogue, a teenage Rose visits Ethan's grave, lays flowers, and rereads the fairy tale her mother once read. She works for a secret organization, carrying powers even Chris does not fully understand. As her car drives away, a man's silhouette stands at the end of the road, watching. The game never says who it is โ€” but players understand: in the world of the Mold, no death is ever fully final, and no father ever truly leaves his daughter.

The fates of the characters

Ethan Winters dies in the Megamycete explosion, but his consciousness survives inside the Mold network โ€” confirmed in Shadows of Rose, where he appears under the name Michael to guide his daughter. Mia Winters survives, is rescued by Chris from Miranda's laboratory, and raises Rose. Rosemary Winters grows up a young woman with Mold powers, shunned for her difference yet hunted by organizations for her strength โ€” and in the end she chooses to accept her powers rather than remove them.

Chris Redfield leaves the village with a new mission: investigating the BSAA's European headquarters, which sent bioweapon soldiers to the village. The four Lords all die: Dimitrescu and Beneviento petrify and shatter, Moreau explodes, Heisenberg dies with his factory. Mother Miranda crumbles to ash, but her consciousness still lurks inside the Megamycete to haunt Rose years later. The Duke vanishes with his cart after bringing Ethan to the ritual site, offering no explanation of his true identity โ€” one of the greatest mysteries the game deliberately leaves open.

Common misconceptions

Did Chris Redfield really kill Mia Winters?

No. The woman Chris shot dead on the fateful night was Mother Miranda disguised as Mia, not the real Mia. The real Mia was imprisoned by Miranda in the laboratory beneath the village all that time, and was only rescued by Chris at the end of the game.

Chris discovered the switch when the Hound Wolf squad watched the Winters family and saw โ€œMiaโ€ behaving strangely. He could not explain it to Ethan that night because the mission demanded immediate action, and that silence made Ethan misunderstand him for most of the game.

Is Ethan Winters an ordinary human?

No. Ethan died during his first encounter with Jack Baker at the Baker mansion in 2017, and his body since then has been a Mold construct created by Eveline. That explains his strange regenerative power: reattaching a severed hand, surviving fatal wounds, and even regrowing his heart after Miranda tore it out.

However, Ethan is not an unfeeling monster: his consciousness, memories and love are all real โ€” the game insists that a Mold copy can still be a human being, with everything that makes up his humanity.

Is Lady Dimitrescu a real vampire?

Not quite. Dimitrescu is not a supernatural vampire but a human mutated by Miranda's Cadou parasite and the hereditary blood disease of her family line. She needs to drink human blood to stay alive, has long claws and regenerative power; her true weaknesses are the poisoned Dagger of Death's Flowers and cold, which freezes her daughters solid.

Her design draws on classic vampire imagery, but in Resident Evil logic everything has a biological explanation โ€” and Dimitrescu is no exception.

Is the village in Village related to the village in Resident Evil 4?

In story terms, the two villages are not directly connected, but Village deliberately pays tribute to the Resident Evil 4 story: the same model of a European village controlled by a cult, the same mysterious arms merchant, and the same briefcase inventory system. Capcom confirmed Village took inspiration from the central role of the village in RE4.

The biggest difference is the enemy: in RE4 the threat is the Plagas parasite, while in Village it is the Mold and the Megamycete โ€” two completely different bioweapon ecosystems, serving the same theme: isolated communities turned into test subjects.

Theories & mysteries

Who is the Duke, really? This is the greatest mystery the game does not answer. The Duke appears everywhere, knows everything, drives his cart through battlefields unharmed, and in Shadows of Rose a frightening version of him appears inside the Mold world with his face hidden. The most popular theory: he is a creature of the Megamycete, or a neutral โ€œgatekeeperโ€ serving the fungal network โ€” a merchant selling to both sides because he belongs to neither.

Is the silhouette at the end of the road Ethan? The epilogue shows a man walking toward Rose's car after she leaves her father's grave. Capcom never confirms his identity, but in Shadows of Rose, Ethan's consciousness survives inside the Megamycete under the name Michael โ€” and many players believe he is still watching over his daughter.

Legacy: from a snowy village to the future of the series

Resident Evil Village passed 10 million copies sold, won Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards 2021, and turned Lady Dimitrescu into a pop-culture phenomenon. But its most important legacy is not sales: it did what no Resident Evil before it dared to do โ€” ask what makes its protagonist human, and answer that humanity lies not in the body but in choices.

For fans, Village is a hinge: it closes the story of the Winters family, opens a new era with Rose and a fallen BSAA, and proves the series can still tell stories that are both horrifying and moving โ€” about a father who died long ago but still walked the whole road just to hold his daughter one last time. If you want to understand why Resident Evil has lasted nearly three decades, start from this snowy village: where every monster was once human, and the only hero is a man who stopped living at the very start of the story.
